Apex Legends Season 5 releases May 12th and brings a lot more than just a new Battle Pass and Legend. Season 5 sees Loba introduced as the new Legend, the first Season Quest, a new Battle Pass, map changes, and big updates to Ranked Series 4. Respawn just hit their 10 year anniversary mark, and the release of Apex Legends Season 5 is the perfect way to celebrate their achievements.
Let’s dive in and see what the new season has to offer.
First introduced in Season 4 during Revenant’s reveal. Revenant was an assassin working for the Mercenary Syndicate. During one of his assignments, Revenant assassinates her family when she’s only nine years old, leaving her with nothing.
She dedicates her life to finding a way to avenge her parents and kill Revenant. During an attempt she sabotages a facility filled with Revenant bodies, forever changing King’s Canyon in an ensuing explosion. She now joins the Games in search of a way to end him for good.
Loba comes with three very unique abilities that will make her a very enticing addition for most squads:
Passive Ability – Eye for Quality: The ability to see nearby epic and legendary loot through walls.
Tactical Ability – Burglar’s Best Friend: A Jump Drive bracelet she stole that allows her to teleport wherever she tosses it.
Ultimate Ability – Black Market Boutique: Her staff teleports all nearby loot to her and her teammates. Each friendly, or enemy, Legend can take up to two items.
With these abilities, Loba can outfit her team with loot in both the early game (Eye for Quality) and later in the round (Black Market Boutique). She can get the drop on enemies utilizing her Jump Drive bracelet, making her an effective flank character as well.
It is going to be exciting to see how players utilize Loba’s unique abilities in Season 5. Her story is very intriguing, and should she succeed in her revenge, could we possibly see our first Legend die in Revenant? We’ll have to play to find out.
“The Broken Ghost” Season Quest
Season 5 introduces the first ever Season Quest to Apex Legends. Loba is on the hunt for a mysterious artifact, the Broken Ghost, and will do anything to get her hands on it before the other Legends or Hammond Robotics. The Quest lasts the length of Season 5 and the artifact is broken into nine pieces the player must find.
So how do you find these artifacts? Once per day during the season, players can earn a Treasure Pack by playing competitive matches. These are found just like other loot on the map, but do not go into your backpack. They are collected on pickup and you receive their contents on returning to the pre-game lobby.
These packs serve two purposes. One is to give the player crafting metals, Battle Pass XP, or Apex Packs. The other is to allow players to take part in the weekly Hunt available for that week.
There is a new Hunt every week during Season 5, and to access it players must collect at least 5 Treasure Packs for that week. Should you fall behind, Treasure Packs can be purchased, but only the amount that has become available to everyone else. If it is day 7 of the season, 6 Treasure Packs will be available to purchase, with the 7th still available for that day in competitive play.
The Hunts themselves are dangerous incursions into Kings Canyon at night. The basis is you, or a squad, drop in, make your way to a location, recover a piece of the artifact, then make your way to an extraction site and make it out alive. Sounds straight forward, but it may not be as easy as it seems.
There are prowlers who will try to stop you as you search for these artifacts. A few automatic respawns will be available to those who choose to drop in solo.
Each Hunt completed will net the player their next piece of the artifact, an exclusive Weapon Charm, and a new chapter in the ongoing “The Broken Ghost” story. These chapters will be pieced together week by week to reveal the story with a culminating chapter after the player has unlocked all nine pieces of the artifact.
Respawn’s lore master, Tom Casiello explains the story as this:
Caught between the Apex Games and Hammond Robotics, Loba is spinning a web of lies and deceit in her personal quest for vengeance… but how far is she willing to go? How does the Broken Ghost fit into her plans for Revenant? And what happens when one Legend stumbles upon the truth? See a side of the Legends’ lives you’ve never seen before… outside of the Games! Alliances will be formed, friendships will be tested, vendettas will be born, and when the dust settles, nothing will be the same again in a mystery that has far-reaching consequences for them all.Tom Casiello – Respawn Entertainment
Respawn is going all in on the story and lore of Apex Legends, and it seems like The Broken Ghost will have far-reaching consequences at its conclusion. We will have to wait and see exactly what those consequences are come the end of Season 5.
As with every new season so far, Season 5 brings big updates to a map. This time it’s King’s Canyon that is getting a makeover. Some locations include changes, while other areas have had things added.
The first location to receive a makeover is Skull Town and Thunderdome. We see this happen in the cinematic trailer when Loba blows up a facility full of Revenant bodies. Skull Town and Thunderdome have been wiped off the map entirely, with the coast now stretching from Octane’s Gauntlet all the way to the cliffs of Water Treatment.
A new area called Salvage has been added across from market that includes an industrial rig which is holding up the Leviathan skull lost in the explosion of Skull Town. A new two-way zipline has been added between Gauntlet and Salvage to help players traverse the now expansive Broken Coast.
Relay and Wetlands have given way to a new zone called Offshore Rig. It connects the now broken Relay, Capacitor, and Swamps. It contains a hanging platform at the north edge that contains high-tier loot. Just inland from Offshore Rig is a new main hub area Capacitor, consisting of plenty of loot and cover from which to rotate during an engagement.
Charge Towers are a brand new addition to King’s Canyon. By interacting with these glowing yellow towers, players can trigger an explosion that instantly recharges the Ultimate abilities of every player nearby, allowing for more dynamic gameplay. Find these spread throughout the map.
Ranked Series 4
Respawn has been paying avid attention to its ranked system in Apex Legends and will continue to do so throughout Season 5. Some things that worked in Series 3 and will be sticking around are as follows:
- Splitting ranked play into 6 week portions. A reset of your rank will occur after 6 weeks in Season 5. This has given a good incentive to continue playing.
- The map will change mid season from Kings Canyon to World’s Edge to keep things interesting.
- Tier and Apex Predator separation will continue. This helps keep the best players in the world competing for Apex Predator.
- Dive trails will remain limited time cosmetic rewards.
Respawn does an incredible job breaking down the intricacies of Series 3 and what is coming with Series 4 on their website. Visit their Series 4 page for an in-depth look at the breakdown.
Season 5 Battle Pass
Fortune’s Favor will see a new Battle Pass much like every season before it. There will be new skins, charms, quips, and a plethora of other things to make your Legend stand out among the rest. The description also includes “new Battle Pass content making a Season 5 debut,” so we should be seeing some exciting new additions as well.
