The Paris Home Series became the first event in which a team won their third Final, and became the first to do it in back-to-back events. Two teams will be trying to become the second team to reach 3 event wins at the New York Home Series: Atlanta FaZe and Chicago Huntsmen. Atlanta and Chicago have yet to play each other during the 2020 Season and is one of the most anticipated matches should it come to fruition.
Since the last event, the players have updated the Gentlemen’s Agreement list of banned items from play to include the Merc Foregrip and 10mm Rounds for the MP5. This is in response to the MP5 being able to outgun the M4 at distance consistently. With this change we could see a much more AR focused meta as the M4 becomes the dominant weapon once again.
The event takes place over three days, with the first two days consisting of Group Play and all knockout matches. Day 3 will see the remaining four teams compete for the Finals and an event win. The teams absent from this event are Seattle Surge, Florida Mutineers, OpTic Gaming Los Angeles, and Dallas Empire.
Teams play in a double elimination format in two separate groups. Group A consists of Paris Legion, Toronto Ultra, Atlanta FaZe, and Los Angeles Guerrillas. Group B consists of New York Subliners, London Royal Ravens, Chicago Huntsmen, and Minnesota RØKKR.
Each team will play one game during Day 1. This will solidify the Qualifier match and first of the knockout matches for each group. Let’s see how Day 1 turned out.
The first match of Group A sees the struggling Paris Legion taking on the bottom of the standings Toronto Ultra. Toronto are able to topple Paris 3 games to 1 behind stellar performances by Cammy and Methodz. Paris once again find themselves in the first knockout match of their group.
The second match of group A pits the juggernaut Atlanta FaZe against an improving Los Angeles Guerrillas. LA made their first Championship Sunday appearance in their last event, the Minnesota Home Series, where they lost to Atlanta 2 games to 3. This could be a chance for revenge.
Unfortunately for the Guerrillas, FaZe came to prove why they are one of the best teams in the League. Behind great outings from Simp and aBeZy, Atlanta take the series 3 games to 1. Toronto moves to the first knockout match against Paris while Atlanta takes on Toronto for a spot in bracket play.
The first match of Group B is between Chicago Huntsmen and London Royal Ravens. Chicago has seen recent hardship and are looking to reassert themselves in talks as the best team in the League. London come out scorching hot behind a 1.72 kill-to-death (K/D) ratio from wuskin to take Game 1 Hardpoint and steal the momentum from Chicago.
The rest of the match will go in favor of the Huntsmen, taking the series 3 games to 1. With the League transitioning to a more AR focused meta, Arcitys and Formal are able to put up some great numbers throughout the whole series, posting 1.36 and 1.27 K/D respectively. Chicago moves on to the Qualifier match while London are sent to the first knockout match of Group B.
The second match of Group B is between the faltering Minnesota RØKKR and the rising New York Subliners. Minnesota will ultimately fall in Game 4 Hardpoint and be knocked down to the knockout match against London. The Subliners look incredible in the respawn, handing RØKKR two devastating defeats in Game 1 and Game 4 Hardpoints to seal the victory.
Day 2 starts with the Qualifier rounds consisting of teams playing to make it into bracket play. The losers will await the winners of each group’s first knockout matches for another chance to make it to the Semifinals. Let’s see how Day 2 went.
The first match of Group A for day 2 is between the #1 seeded Atlanta FaZe and the #12 seeded Toronto Ultra. The safe bet is for Atlanta to take the win handily, but Toronto have something else to say about it. After going down 2 – 1 in the series, the Ultra rally together to take Game 4 and Game 5 and move on to the Semifinals for just the second time this year.
Knockout match #1 for Group A is between Paris Legion and Los Angeles Guerrillas. Behind a solid performance from the whole team, Paris are able to sweep LA 3 – 0 and win their first match in 3 months. Guerrillas will remain at the bottom of the standings, while the Legion have a tough road ahead against FaZe.
Even after the much needed win, Paris are not up to the task to take on the red hot Atlanta FaZe. Atlanta sweeps Paris behind a crazy 1.76 overall K/D from aBeZy advancing them to the Semifinals. Paris are sent home, but get their first CDL points from an event in a long while.
The first match of Group B is between Chicago Huntsmen and New York Subliners. Chicago come out swinging taking the first two matches, but New York answer right back taking Games 3 and 4 to tie the series 2 – 2. Huntsmen come out on top in Game 5 Search and Destroy behind another great performance by Envoy, securing their spot in the Semifinals.
Knockout match #1 for Group B pits Minnesota against London. Both teams are still in the top half of the standings, but have not made any headway in some time due to struggles finding success. This event sees London find a little success as they take the match 3 games to 2, sending Minnesota home immediately for the second event in a row.
After coming out on top in Game 1 Hardpoint, London can’t seem to find any traction for the rest of the match. New York take a nail biting Game 2 Search and Destroy to give them the momentum and capitalize on it, taking the match 3 games to 1. The Subliners make another Semifinals appearance while London are sent home once again.
Day 3 consists of the Semifinals and Finals. Chicago Huntsmen face off against Atlanta FaZe, and Toronto Ultra take on New York Subliners. Let’s see how the shortest day of any event this season progressed.
Semifinals Match #1
The long awaited showdown between two juggernauts is finally happening in the New York Home Series. Chicago Huntsmen face off against Atlanta FaZe to put to rest the debate on who would dominate who. This match turns out to be much more one-sided than expected.
Arcitys and Formal show up big once again in Game 1 Hardpoint, carrying the Huntsmen to an early 1 – 0 lead. FaZe actually outslayed Chicago, but they couldn’t get anything going on rotations allowing Huntsmen to win quite easily, 250 – 160. Game 2 Search and Destroy goes to Chicago 6 rounds to 1, and sees Envoy once again proving to be one of the best in the game type, constantly confusing teams and finding creative ways to flank.
In danger of being swept in their first match against Chicago, Atlanta need to take Game 3 Domination to stay alive. Unfortunately, the SMG players of the Huntsmen come alive and send Atlanta home in a very convincing 3 – 0 sweep.
Although this is the first meeting of the two titans in 2020, Chicago made quick work of Atlanta and it will be interesting how the match goes should they meet again in another event. Chicago moves on to the Finals.
Semifinals Match #2
Toronto are making their second debut on Championship Sunday this year, while New York have made it to the Semifinals in their last four events. Subliners have arguably shown the most improvement of any team since their slow start to the season. The addition of Mack has skyrocketed the team up the standings.
Attach leads New York in a crazy comeback win in the final seconds of Game 1 Hardpoint, snatching the victory from Toronto 250 – 247. Game 2 Search and Destroy is much more one-sided. Subliners are able to trounce the Ultra 6 rounds to 2 with an incredible 1v3 clutch from Accuracy.
Toronto put up an incredible fight in Game 3 Domination, but New York hold on long enough to secure the game and sweep Ultra 3 – 0. Mack closes out the match with a seven spree, posting 27 kills and 17 deaths to lead the Subliners to victory.
New York move on to face Chicago in the Finals while Toronto are sent home after a great event by their standards.
Chicago have struggled as of late, and have not made it all the way to the Finals since the Seattle Home Series in May. New York have continued to rise and have made top 4 at their last 4 events, but this is their first Finals appearance at their own Home Series. The Huntsmen are fighting for their third event win and to move back into the top 2, while Subliners are looking to break into the top half of the standings.
Game 1 Hardpoint is hard fought by both teams, but the lightning fast play style of the Subliners prove too much for the Huntsmen. New York takes the game 250 – 238 and go up 1 – 0 in the match. Chicago needs to answer big in Game 2 Search and Destroy and swing the momentum back in their favor.
However, New York have other plans. Game 2 is hard fought once again by both teams, but Subliners come out on top 6 rounds to 4, threatening to send home the Huntsmen in a convincing sweep.
Game 3 Domination sees Chicago on the verge of making a comeback and sending the match to Game 4, but a heads up flank by Temp and Accuracy flips the spawns and secure the victory for New York. The Subliners sweep Huntsmen and secure their first event win of the year at their home stand. New York are quickly becoming a team to watch as the season begins to close out.
There are only two events left in the CDL 2020 Season for teams to improve their standings for Champs. The next event will see 3 of the top 5 teams fighting for dominance, while London looks to break back into the top half of the standings. New York can secure their #5 seed with a win.
Up next we have the London Home Series. The London Home Series will take place online from July 17 – 19. For a full list of event dates see the Official Call of Duty League website.
