This summer’s Season of Arrivals almost feels like two seasons together in one. The first took place on Io fighting off our first encounter with the Pyramid ships. In this second “piece” of the season, the ships have spread. They can be seen flying over four planets including Io, Mercury, Mars, and most importantly, Titan. This small moon is now the site of the popular Contact public event and the launching point for Destiny’s newest Exotic Quest. Ruinous Effigy is an intensely cool new exotic Trace Rifle with perks like we’ve never seen before. Here’s everything you need to know about this awesome new weapon and how to acquire it.
Weapon Type: Void elemental Trace Rifle
Intrinsic Trait: Transmutation – Final blows with this weapon collapse victims into Void Transmutation spheres
Exotic Perk: Evolution – Transmutation spheres you create can be picked up and wielded as weapons by you or your allies.
Step 1 – Growth
The first step will be very familiar to players who have been engaged with this most recent season. All Guardians need to do is follow the steps to complete this week’s pinnacle Interference mission with Eris. Start by picking up the quest from the Prismatic Recaster by the Drifter. Complete a couple Contact events, gather Umbral Traces, and run the mission like normal. I got great progress from Reckoning, but it’s a little uneven considering progress depends on the number of elites killed so if you prefer the other activities, go for it.
At the end of the mission, a new scene unfolds in front of you including Eris and Zavala discussing something huge. After it’s over, players are gifted a branch from the tree where Eris is found. This branch will eventually become Ruinous Effigy.
Step 2 – Pendulum
- Collect 25 pieces of Calcified Light
- Kill 15 of Savathun’s Marionettes
This is the most involved step of the quest. The Calcified Light is found in tiny pieces scattered across the four planets currently occupied by the pyramid ships. Five are on Mercury, Five on Mars, 5 of Titan, and 10 are on Io. While the Calcified Light is very small, all players need to do is pull out their ghosts and the markers will appear. If you haven’t found all of them on a given planet, hop on your sparrow, then pull out your ghost and drive around. The Calcified Light has about a 200 meter radius for your ghost so you’ll need to be at least sort of close by.
The Marionettes are a bit of a grind. The “right” way to do it is to kill the one that spawns alongside the Heroic Contact boss, but fifteen is a LOT of Contact. Instead, try this little secret. When the Contact event is active on a planet, head to the landing area where the event is not currently happening. This week, Contact is on Titan at Siren’s Watch. Head to The Rig and you’ll find the Contact Heroic bosses are spawning all over the place. Along with these bosses, you’ll see Champion Marionettes that you can kill pretty easily. Just farm these spawns and your kills will go much faster. Shout out to youtuber Jarv for the heads up on the Marionette spawns.
Step 3 – Feed
- Complete Gambit or Reckoning Rounds
- Void Kills
- Precision Multikills
The final step in the quest. I highly recommend you avoid Reckoning for this part. Progress is great if you have a good team and can reliably complete the activity. The problem is that solo queuing into Reckoning is an absolute nightmare, and failing the event grants embarrassingly low progress. Just jump into Gambit or Gambit Prime and grind out the void kills while you’re there. I don’t expect that you’ll nail the precision kills while you’re at it since speed is so important to Gambit. If so, head to your favorite Lost Sector (mine is Core Terminous on Mars) and just pop some heads for a couple runs. You’ll finish in no time.
Congratulations! Head back to the Prismatic Recaster and you’ll be granted the newest and coolest exotic in Destiny 2!
Ruinous Effigy Catalyst
Effect: This weapon deals increased damage against targets damaged by Transmutation spheres.
In order to get the catalyst for Ruinous Effigy, just get a few kills by slamming your Transmutation spheres into other enemies. Mine dropped on literally the first kill with an orb slam. Easy peasy.
Completing the catalyst is a different story. The technical goal for this catalyst completion is to get kills with the weapon OR use Ruinous Effigy to destroy the mysterious Savathun’s Eyes we’ve seen appear all over the system. The catalyst requires 5000 “points”. Killing an enemy with the beam from Ruinous Effigy grants 1 point, while killing enemies with the slam ability grants 3 points a piece. On the other hand, popping one of Savathun’s eyes grants far more progress per eye! The entire catalyst can be completed after hitting only 30 of the 50 eyes around the system. I’ve posted a YT guide to all 50 locations to make the whole thing go much faster. Big shout out to youtuber KhackisHD for the guide.
Ruinous Effigy represents an incredible step forward in exotic weapon design. There’s so many interesting things about this weapon from how it looks to its many abilities. Don’t forget that, in addition to slamming the Transmutation orbs for damage, Guardians can hold the Block button while holding the orb for an alternate effect. While blocking a wide sphere appears around the player draining and weakening enemies nearby AND blocking damage from outside the sphere. The add clearing ability for these orbs is just insane. The weapon is supremely fun to use and everyone should get their hands on it quick! Best of luck, Guardians!
