Getting more followers on Mixer can seem like a mystery. Some accounts just seem to get more followers all the time. So how do they do it?
In this article we’re going to share some very specific actions you can use to encourage viewers on Mixer to hit that Follow button.
Note: We’ve talked about getting more Twitch followers before, and it’s a good idea to read that article too because the principles we talk about with Twitch also pertain to Mixer.
Generally speaking, getting more followers is all about engaging and interacting with your audience. There are 3 things you should focus on when trying to get viewers to follow your channel:
- Welcome Everyone
- Create Excitement
- Be Yourself
1. Welcome Everyone
It sounds obvious, but when a viewer jumps into your stream for the first time, they have never seen you before. They don’t really know you or your community yet, so they’re on the lookout for things that will help them feel like you’re a good match for them or not. This is the most valuable time in your relationship with that person, and it’s up to you to make a great first impression.
If a new viewer feels comfortable enough to begin talking with you in chat, the chances of them following you increase exponentially.
The problem is a lot of viewers don’t chat. They come in, watch (lurk) for a bit and leave. So how can we get them to chat?
The answer, welcome them. It’s that simple, just say hello.
By saying hello and welcoming a new user you encourage them to chat. You start to build a really simple but positive relationship with them. This in turn will increase the chances they hit the follow button.
There are two ways you can start welcoming new viewers and you can use whichever one you feel comfortable with, or both together (I use both).
The Bot Approach
First you can use a bot to tell you whenever viewers enter or leave your stream. Most bots do this and a great one for Mixer is Mix it Up.
With your bot in place, make sure you welcome viewers when they join your stream. e.g. “ClutchisAmazing just jumped in, welcome to the stream! How’s your day going?”
Using this approach you will find that users will often respond immediately. Then you get the chance to have a back-and-forth with them, which can turn into them hitting that follow button.
This strategy also has the added benefit of keeping your stream engaging, since other viewers enjoy watching new viewers come in and talk to you.
The Shout Out
The second approach is to do a few “shout outs” each time you stream. A shout out is when you look at everyone in chat and read off their names. e.g. “Let’s do a shout out” (read names) “Welcome to the stream thanks for being here!”
Shout outs will encourage new viewers to chat and follow. Almost every time I do a shout out I get a couple new followers.
Remember, what makes streaming different then other platforms is the ability for viewers to connect in real-time with the streamer. By welcoming and shouting out new viewers you initiate the connection and viewers will hit that follow button.
One thing to watch out for here is asking for followers. It can be tempting to ask new viewers to follow you. But there’s a fine line between being engaging and appearing desperate, so be cautious about asking people to follow you directly.
2. Create Excitement
Some of the most engaging streams out there are streamers who do a good job of creating excitement for new followers.
You can do this by having a funny gif, video, or sound play when someone follows you. Maybe you have a close up shot of your face, or you do a little dance, or even a funny scream when someone follows.
Don’t forget there are lots of streamers out there, and the ones that do well are usually brining something unique to the table. So feel free to get creative here. Try out a few things until you find something that feels genuine but can’t be found anywhere else.
You can even do something as simple as having everyone in chat drop a special emote for new followers. Whatever you choose to do, the goal is to create excitement when someone follows.
Creating excitement when someone follows encourages other viewers to do the same. When you do this correctly you will find that when one person hits the follow button other viewers immediately do as well because of the excitement you’ve created around it.
3. Be Yourself
We’ve talked specifically about things you can actively do to encourage viewers to hit that follow button. But if you treat this like a formula then you’ll end up being just like everyone else who follows these steps. So when preparing to implement these strategies, remember the best thing you can do is to be yourself.
Be unique, but remember that sincerity is key and viewers will know when you’re being disingenuous.
Tailor your strategy to your personality and your brand. What are you good at, what are your likes and interests, and what are things that excite you?
In streaming, YOU are ultimately the reason people choose to follow and return to your stream. People will follow you if you focus on being yourself.
Getting More Mixer Followers: Summary
Successful streaming is about interacting and connecting with viewers. The more you can do that, the more successful your stream will be. If you put these strategies into play, you’ll get more followers on Mixer, but don’t forget: it can be a long road.
Don’t forget that another great way to connect with viewers is with the Clutch app. Upload your clips, share them with gamers and build a great community that will come follow your stream too.
Building a following isn’t easy, but if you stick to these principles, it’ll make your life a little easier.
