In previous posts I’ve talked with you about How To Get More Twitch Followers. In it we discussed different strategies you can utilize to get more people in your stream to hit that follow button.
In this post I want to take the strategy one step further. I want to discuss with you how to get more people to VIEW your stream.
Why is getting more views important?
Getting more people to view your stream is important for a couple reasons;
- The more views you get the more potential follows you can have.
- With more views comes higher rankings and more exposure.
- High viewer numbers give you more authority in your space as a streamer.
- It’s all about the eyeballs! High viewer traffic is EVERYTHING in streaming.
Oh, and if you’d like to see a video version of this post, we’ve got one of those for you too!
3 tips to help you get more viewers on Twitch
There is a lot of advice out there on how to get more viewers to your channel. I want to focus on what I believe are the three most important strategies you can implement right away to start getting more eyes on your stream.
1. Take advantage of major events
Every week, month, and year there is a major event for something going on somewhere in the world. You can use these events to help get more eyeballs on your stream.
Is there DLC or a major update for a game you play coming up? These updates are going to create higher volumes of interest in and around the game.
You can use this spike in interest to get more views. Strategically plan to play and discuss the DLC or updates leading up to and immediately following their release.
Major events like E3 are also times when interest in games and gaming spikes. I have a friend who ran a 24 hour E3 stream during the week of this event and got more views on his channel in that one week then he got for the whole year. E3 is huge and can drive a lot of new views to your stream.
To make the most of any event you will need to first identify them and plan your streams in advance. What will the focus of your stream be? How will you promote it? What assets will you need to enhance your stream during these events?
Keep in mind, these events don’t need to be game or gaming related. Halloween is a great example of something you can use to drive more viewers to your stream. During Halloween there is a spike in interest in scary games and movies. Consider streaming a game in the horror genre or create Halloween themed streams in the weeks leading up to the holiday.
With a little bit of planning and creativity major events are a great way to get more viewers on Twitch.
2. Rank as high as possible
This seems like an obvious strategy but, are you ranking as high as you could be when you stream?
When you scroll a game on twitch you can see that the streamers who get the most views are the streamers who rank near the top. This can be a monumental task in bigger games like Fornite, Apex or League of Legends. Chances are you will never rank near the top in these games, at least not until you grow a sizable audience.
Consider playing games with less viewers at first. If you can rank at the top in these games you will get more views. Even though the game is smaller, yours will be the first stream anyone sees when they browse it. Indie games are great for this.
The trick here is to pick a game with little competition from other streamers, but a lot of interest from viewers. One of the games that comes to mind is Forza. This is not a largely streamed game, but one with a solid enough player base to generate lot of views.
Do whatever you can to rank near the top while streaming. Every time you do, you’ll notice an increase in viewers.
3. Turn your streams into evergreen content
You need to utilize other platforms to drive traffic to your stream. Turning your streams into evergreen content is a great way to do this.
What’s Evergreen content?
Evergreen content is content about a topic that will be interesting over time (not just for a specific time period). It’s content that viewers can search for and find on any day at any time.
YouTube is a platform full of evergreen content. At any time you can search and find videos from creators who might have uploaded it months ago, but which has only become relevant to you the moment you need it. This is great for streamers. We can use content like this to drive people to our channel whenever a viewer comes across it. Use any platform (YouTube, Facebook, Instagram etc.) to create permanent evergreen content from your stream.
Do not simply upload your entire stream to these platforms and think that’s going to work. You need to create highlights, clips and how to videos from your streams that create value for those watching on these other platforms.
When you do you this, you’ll be creating content that is permanent. Anyone at anytime can find it and, if you do it right, it will drive them to seek out your channel.
Clutch is a great platform for this. Clutch is the perfect tool for sharing your highlights and clips, and using those clips to drive more viewers to your stream. If you haven’t checked out Clutch head over and start uploading your clips today!
The name of the game on Twitch is viewers. The more viewers you have, the more followers you will get. The more followers you get the more subs you get. The more subs you get the more you get paid which enables you to do what you love as a living: playing games!
